Version 5 irritatingly slow at simply closing open files

Internal pdf viewer has become frustratingly slow at simply closing an open pdf. Dont even want to use the app anymore. What have you folks done to hobble this once excellent product??
Also cannot turn off "searching for PC" pop up. What is this??
